I’ve been struggling with HH for a few years, but I just found this community! It’s so nice to finally talk to people who GET IT. What’s one thing you wish you knew sooner?

That ferritin alone isn’t enough—you need to check transferrin saturation too! 👍

That gut health plays a HUGE role in iron absorption. I wish I had known sooner!

I keep hearing about gut health. What should I do?

Probiotics, fiber, and avoiding processed foods help a lot!

That I needed to push doctors for testing. So many of us get dismissed!

I’m getting mixed advice—some say HH affects hormones, others say it doesn’t. Can high iron really mess with testosterone & estrogen levels?

Yes! My hormones were all over the place before I got my iron under control. 🔥 👍

Iron can disrupt the endocrine system. It affects cortisol, testosterone, and even thyroid function.

That makes sense! I feel like my energy is completely off.

Ask for a full hormone panel + iron panel to see the full picture!

Phlebotomy helped balance mine. Once my iron dropped, my testosterone went back to normal!

Has anyone else had people question your HH diagnosis? My hematologist confirmed it, but some people act like I’m making it up!

People LOVE to act like experts. If your iron is high and your genes confirm it, that’s all the proof you need. 🙄 👍

I just found this site, and WOW—why did I not know about this sooner?! A one-stop shop for HH?! I’ve been managing this for years on my own. How long have you all been dealing with this?

Right?! I was diagnosed five years ago, but I feel like I’m still figuring things out. 😅

Why does HH make my muscles cramp so badly? My legs and hands lock up sometimes, and I don’t know if it’s from iron or something else. 😩

I get leg cramps all the time! I think iron affects muscle function. 👍

Magnesium helped me a TON with cramping. Try Magnesium Glycinate or Threonate!

Threonate helps more with nerve function, Glycinate is great for muscles & sleep!

What’s the best way to lower blood pressure without loading on iron-rich foods? I read that beetroot and pomegranate help, but they’re high in iron. What else works?

Celery juice is great for BP and won’t overload iron! 🥒 👍

My ferritin is finally normal (35), but I feel worse! Could it be from the blood loss?

YES. When ferritin drops quickly, you can feel wiped out. Give it time. 🩸 👍

How important is it to see a hematologist? I have my HH diagnosis, I’ve started phlebotomy, and my primary care doctor said they’ll take over after I see one. Is it worth going?

    • #78922

      Guest

Hematologists can order more in-depth tests (liver scans, inflammation markers, etc.), but if your primary doctor is already managing phlebotomy, you might not need one. 👍

If your numbers are stable and being monitored, you may not need one long-term, but it’s good for an initial evaluation.

Just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in October. Is there a connection between HH and diabetes?

    • #78912

YES. Iron overload can damage the pancreas and increase diabetes risk. 🔥 👍

If you lower iron levels, it might help stabilize blood sugar! Some people see big improvements after phlebotomy.

That’s interesting! So reducing iron could help with diabetes too?

Yep! Get your iron down and track your glucose—it might improve!

I’m thinking of going off birth control to help manage HH, but I also have endometriosis. I can’t donate blood because I’m underweight, and my doctor won’t do phlebotomy unless my ferritin is over 500. Would stopping birth control even help?

    • #78901

It might help, but if endometriosis makes your periods unbearable, it’s a trade-off. 😬 👍

Losing blood helps, but if it wrecks your quality of life, it’s not worth it. Maybe ask about low-dose phlebotomy?

        That’s a good idea! I didn’t know low-dose was an option.

Some doctors will do small draws—worth asking!
