My wife is really getting tired of my mood swings. When my levels are up, I have a short fuse, and I feel completely justified. It’s only once I feel better I see I was being a jerk….Any suggestions on how to handle this?

That is a tough one, I hear you though. You do feel like you are not doing anything wrong…..At the time.

Frankie, sounds like you are treading on thin ice, I would be careful! LOL I actually try really hard to think before I speak, and think about how they are going to take my reaction. I will admit, sometimes it is impossible!

I just got my iron panel back, and my ferritin is 430. My doctor says I don’t need phlebotomy yet, but I feel exhausted, my joints hurt, and I can barely focus. Does this sound right to anyone?!

That sounds WRONG. Anything over 300 should be treated. If you feel bad, you need to push for it! 👍

Doctors love ignoring symptoms until you’re at organ failure levels. 😡

Exactly! I don’t want to wait until I have liver damage.

Find a new doctor or demand a referral to a hematologist. You shouldn’t be dismissed like this!

Welcome! First step: Get a full iron panel. 🩸 That tells you where you stand. 👍

First phlebotomy done! I also take methotrexate and Humira for arthritis, but I’m worried about my liver. My next rheumatologist appointment isn’t until April. Should I stop these meds?

That’s a tough call. Methotrexate & Humira can stress the liver, but stopping suddenly isn’t safe either. Talk to your doctor ASAP. 🏥 👍

Maybe ask your hematologist to check liver enzymes & ferritin together?

I was just told to ‘avoid red meat’ and that’s it. No testing, no follow-up, just that. Is this really how they treat HH?!

It’s ridiculous how many doctors give the ‘just eat less red meat’ speech. 🤦‍♀️ 👍

Diet is PART of it, but monitoring iron levels is the key! Demand a ferritin & TS% test.

Got my official HH diagnosis today. Pathogenic homozygous C282Y. 🩸 Ferritin 1371, TS% 91%. First phlebotomy done! They’re transferring me to gastro for monitoring. Is it normal that they didn’t test my iron levels after my first draw?

    • #78842

It’s common, but they should be monitoring your iron every few draws. Keep track yourself!

High ALT could mean liver strain. Make sure they do a follow-up scan!

I feel like giving up. I’ve done phlebotomies, I’ve adjusted my diet, and my iron just won’t go down. What else can I do?

    • #78832

I’ve been there. Have you looked into gut health? Your gut controls how much iron you absorb. 👍

Also, what’s your inflammation level (CRP)? If it’s high, it could be slowing iron removal.

I didn’t even think about gut health! What should I be doing?

Probiotics, fiber, and avoid processed foods—your gut can hold onto iron if it’s inflamed.

How do you balance workouts with phlebotomy? I feel wiped out after mine. 👍

I schedule my workouts AROUND my phlebotomy days. I do strength on non-draw days, and cardio on light days!

My ferritin is LOW (27), but my transferrin saturation is HIGH (74%). My doctor says no treatment is needed. Is this normal? I feel awful!

    • #78811

Doctors focus too much on ferritin alone. High TS% means your body is overloaded with circulating iron! You need another opinion. 🚨 👍

It’s about where the iron is. You could still be storing it in your organs even if ferritin is low.

That’s what I was thinking! I don’t feel fine, but they keep telling me I am.

Ask for a liver scan! High saturation + symptoms = something is off.

Doctors love to look at only ferritin and ignore TS%. If it’s high, you could still be storing iron in your organs. 🛑

This is why tracking both numbers is so important. Ask for a liver scan!

I don’t talk about this much, but HH has been messing with my mental health. The fatigue, brain fog, and frustration with doctors—it’s been a lot. 😞 Anyone else struggling with this?
