What’s the biggest myth you’ve heard about HH?

    • #78059

That HH only affects men. 🙄

That you can ‘cure it’ by just eating less red meat.

YES! Diet helps, but it’s not a cure!

I’ve even heard doctors say that. They need better education.

I had my first phlebotomy yesterday and felt completely drained after. Does it always hit this hard?

Yep, the first few can be rough. Drink lots of water and eat something with protein after.

I felt horrible after my first one, but by the third, I was recovering faster.

That’s good to hear! I was worried this was going to be my new normal.

Has anyone else noticed they bruise easily with HH? My arms and legs are covered in random bruises. Is this an iron thing?

    • #78041

Yes! My doctor said it’s from blood vessels weakening with iron overload.

What was your first HH symptom? I had extreme fatigue before anything else. What was yours?

Joint pain and brain fog. I thought I was just overworked.

Random stomach pain that never went away.

Yes! Once my ferritin dropped, my digestion got way better.

Has anyone had weird skin changes from HH? My knuckles are dark, and my skin looks a little bronze. Is this normal?

Yes! My skin got darker too, especially on my face.

For me, it faded over time, but it took months.

How do you handle joint pain from HH? Some days, my hands feel like they don’t even work. Any tips?

Curcumin helped me a lot. Also cutting out sugar reduced my inflammation.

Warm compresses + stretching help me loosen up in the mornings.

Magnesium and omega-3s made a huge difference for me!

I was told my fatigue was ‘just normal for my age.’ Turns out my ferritin was 900. How many of you were misdiagnosed before they finally checked your iron?

I was told it was depression. They put me on meds instead of checking my iron!

They told me I had chronic fatigue syndrome. Nope, just iron overload.

It’s scary how common this is. If they had tested earlier, we wouldn’t have suffered for years.

Does anyone else feel like they’re getting worse before they feel better? I’ve been doing phlebotomies for months, but I still feel exhausted and weak. How long did it take you to notice improvements?

I just got my latest bloodwork back, and my ferritin is 550. My doctor says I ‘don’t need phlebotomy yet’ even though I feel awful. Is this normal?!

    • #77983

That’s NOT normal. Anything over 300 (men) or 200 (women) should be treated!

Some doctors won’t act until it’s way too late. You need a second opinion.

Why aren’t more doctors recognizing the connection between HH and mental health? The anxiety, brain fog, and depression are real.

I was put on antidepressants instead of them checking my iron. Turns out, it was just HH messing with my brain. 🤯

Same! Imagine if they tested iron FIRST instead of throwing meds at people.

Anxiety was my first symptom. Doctors never connected it to iron.
