My doctor told me my joint pain has ‘nothing to do with iron overload.’ Meanwhile, I can barely grip things in the morning. Is this true?!

    • #78379

That’s NOT true. Iron deposits in joints over time and causes serious pain. 👍

Doctors don’t know enough about HH! My arthritis got better after lowering iron.

I feel like they just don’t want to admit iron can cause long-term damage.

They don’t. That’s why they ignore joint symptoms until it’s too late.

I’ve been doing phlebotomy for months, but I still feel weak and lightheaded. Does it ever get easier? What helped you recover faster?

First few months were rough for me too. Staying hydrated and eating protein after helped. 👍

Electrolytes and magnesium made a huge difference in how I felt after phlebotomy.

I didn’t think about electrolytes! What do you use?

I mix coconut water with sea salt, works great.

I was just told my ferritin of 320 is ‘nothing to worry about.’ Meanwhile, I feel exhausted, my joints ache, and my skin is changing color. Is this normal?!

    • #78359

Ferritin over 300 should definitely be addressed! Doctors don’t realize how iron affects the whole body. 👍

They always wait until organ damage starts before taking it seriously.

Exactly! Why do they wait for things to get worse before treating?

        • #78366

Because the system is reactive, not proactive. Keep pushing for treatment!

What do you wish you had known earlier about HH?

That iron can build up in the brain. I had no idea! 👍

That it doesn’t just affect older people. I was diagnosed in my 30s!

What’s the worst advice a doctor has given you about HH?

    • #78342

‘Just eat less red meat.’ As if that’s the cure! 👍

‘It’s just stress. Try yoga.’ Meanwhile, my ferritin was over 900.

Doctors seriously need better training on HH.

Has anyone else been told that their ferritin is ‘normal’ even though they feel awful? Mine is 180, and my doctor says I don’t need treatment.

Doctors love saying ‘normal’ when it’s actually too high! 👍

You need to look at transferrin saturation, not just ferritin.

Good point! Mine is 60%. That’s bad, right?

Yes! Anything over 45% is concerning. You need a second opinion.

Why does no one talk about the brain fog that comes with HH? Some days, I feel like I can’t even think straight.

Brain fog is the worst. Some days I forget what I was saying mid-sentence! 👍

I started taking Omega-3s and curcumin, and my brain fog improved a bit.

It faded after my ferritin dropped below 100.

Does anyone else get dizzy or lightheaded from HH? It’s happening more often lately, and I don’t know if it’s normal.

How many of you were misdiagnosed before they figured out it was HH? I went through five different doctors and three wrong diagnoses!

They told me I had chronic fatigue syndrome first. Nope, just iron overload. 👍

They put me on antidepressants for ‘low energy’ instead of checking my iron!

Same! It’s crazy how doctors don’t check iron first.
